2011 CONSTRUCTION OF THE NACOGDOCHES AERO MODELERS CLUB FLYING SITE

SEE THE UPDATES BELOW AND THE LATEST PHOTOS AT THE END OF THIS PAGE

Construction of our new covered shed at the A.L. Mangham Jr. Regional Airport began May 16, 2011.  On June 18th we rented a "Ground Hog," a hydraulically driven post hole digger and attempted to drill 14 - 12" by 36" holes.  The Ground Hog could not penetrate more than about 8" and finally after moving to three different locations the Ground Hog "ground" to a halt!  June 25th we brought in the big gun.  A "Bobcat" with a 12" by 48" auger attachment.   The first hole required almost thirty-minutes to complete.  It was a real testimony to the effects of the prolonged Texas drought. The last hole was completed just in time to break for lunch and call it a week-end!  The hard part seems to be behind us!

The week of June 27th will find us installing the 4" by 4" metal pole supports in preparation for the asphalt contractor to prepare and surface the area under and around the shed.  Once the asphalt is in place we will continue with erection of the storage shed walls and the roof.  When completed we will have a covered area 16' by 48' with a storage area for our tractor and supplies.  Taxi way will flow from in front of the shed onto the paved runway.  We are on the way to having some of the best facilities in all of East Texas!

August 14, 2011 -  Change of plans!!  Since the asphalt contractor was knee deep in Missouri still doing cleanup after floods and tornadoes we decided to go ahead and put the roof and storage building up to give us some relief from the sun (there is no relief from the heat)!! We decided to put landscape pavers under the shed roof to get things moving along.  Later the asphalt contractor will build an area around the shed and a strip out to the runway. With any luck we will have the roof on by the weekend of August 21 and we can start enjoying "SHADE."

August 28, 2011 - The roof is now in place and we have "SHADE."  Bay Solomon plans to take his bobcat out next Tuesday to move the sand and level the ground under the shed.  Dave McGoldrick and Bay ran a level line Saturday in preparation for the work Bay will complete.  The next step will be setting the forms and installing rebar in preparation for the pouring the concrete for the floor.  Finally, we are beginning to see some real progress.

August 30, 2011 - This morning Bay Solomon brought his bobcat out and moved all the sand to the shed.  Bay spread the sand and with the help of Keith Christian leveled the area in preparation for setting the forms.  Many thanks to Bay and Keith for getting things level!  Our shed is looking good!!  Be sure and see the latest photos below.
Jackie Ivey plans to install safety fencing and form up the concrete pad for pouring the concrete sometime after September 7.

September 20, 2011 - Our work crew began arriving at 7:30 a.m.  Bay Solomon and David Hinson purchased all the materials on Monday and dropped them at the work site so everything was ready for us to start work framing.  The framing went very well.  The main work was completed by noon.  Keith Christian began the work of laying out lines to assure the surface was level and at 4 inch depth.  We finally wrapped up about 2:00.

September 21, 2011 - Jim Sevey met with the city engineer at the site for an inspection of the framing.  Approval was granted!  Many thanks to Jim for taking care of the construction permit and inspection.  Keith Christian continued the work and completed leveling the area of the storage building. Keith did a fine job of keeping us on the level!  Believe me we needed his keen eye.  Thanks to Keith and a long list of volunteers we are now ready to pour concrete! JUST ONE MORE BIG PUSH AND WE WILL FINISH!

September 30, 2011 - We decided to contract out the final concrete pour and finishing work in order to complete the work quickly.  We hired Dave Wallace from here in Nacogdoches to do the work.  Today Dave's crew of three started at about 7:30 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. all the concrete was in place.  The finishing work was completed about 2:00 p.m. and as you can see below it looks really great! We have just a little work to do constructing the storage section of the building but we should be complete within the next week or two.

November 12, 2011 - The work is complete and we held a Grand Opening Flyin in celebration.
